What is the difference between Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC? This is a great question! While these cannabinoids are very similar, they are also different in some ways. First off, they are both Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

What is THC?

Let’s begin by getting a good understanding of THC. THC comes from Cannabis plants. It is the main compound responsible for the intoxicating effects of Cannabis. For the most part, Delta 8 THC is extracted from Hemp plants, while Delta 9 THC is derived from Marijuana plants. This, along with the requirement of containing less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC, are the reasons for Delta 8 THC being legal on the federal level.

Difference Between Delta 8 and Delta 9 Molecular Structures

When looking at the molecular structures of Delta 8 and Delta 9, you may need to take a second glance before you catch the subtle difference between these two compounds. In fact, both of these types of THC have the same molecular formula of C21H30O2. The small difference comes on the carbon atom. For Delta 9, there is a double bond on the 9th chain. For Delta 8, the double bond is located on the 8th chain of the carbon atom.

Difference Between the Potency of Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC

Delta 9 THC is more potent than Delta 8 THC. When looking at the serving sizes of these cannabinoids, Delta 8 requires about two times more than Delta 9 to achieve similar effects. For example, Delta 9 Gummies are usually 10mg, while Delta 8 Gummies are typically 25mg.
